EYE-HOP Homeplay These exercises are designed to help you go from reading one word at a time to reading groups of words at a time. You will glance at a word group and understand it’s meaning at once. The advantage is not only time but also wear and tear on your ocular muscles. The ocular muscles in the eye are the weakest in the human body. When you read, they must refocus on every word. When you read four or five words at a time, they only need to focus one fifth as much. This will allow you to read longer with higher performance. The idea is to start reading two words at a time. Then you move up to three words at a time, then four. When you get fast at the four words, you will notice that your brain is no longer pronouncing the words inside your head. You are getting the full meaning of the phrase without pronouncing it! We call that “The Breakthrough!” The idea is to read the Eye-Hop exercises at least five times per day for five to ten minutes per session. Reading for more than ten minutes is NOT
recommended. In fact, this is a formal warning: do not do Eye-Hop for more than ten minutes at a time in the first few days. There is no advantage to it and it can make your eyes tired. After that you may do as much as you
like. Eye-Hop is the key to success in this course. I tell every class: “Whoever does the most Eye-Hop sessions sees the highest percentage increase in their R.E. score.” For now, the only time you hop (or bounce) is when you are actually doing the Eye-Hop exercises. Don’t hop when reading text. Use your Hand Pacing technique for regular reading. Later you will merge your Eye-Hop skills with the Hand Pacing, but only at the proper time. You’ll learn about that later. Here are sites to printing out your Eye-Hops: All you need for now is the 2-Word Eye-Hop. In a few days you will need the 3-Word Eye-Hop. By the time you get to class, you will be receiving your printed booklets.
